      American Open Chess Championship - Scholastic Tournament

      A chess tournament for youngsters who wish to compete in the game of Kings & Queens. The American Open Chess Championship - Scholastic Tournament provides junior talents to compete in more than 20 different sections. This tournament accommodates all levels from beginner to advance, and grades Kindergarten to 12th grade. Three skill level divisions - Booster, Junior Varsity, and Varsity - are available for students to join. Booster is a non-rated tournament play where players are grouped by grade levels, and play each other within that group. While the Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity divisions are grouped with consideration of the player's grade AND USCF (US Chess Federation) rating. The Booster division will only play on Saturday. Junior Varsity (JV) consists of sections for players in K -12th grade rated UNDER 1200. This section plays only on Sunday. Varsity is the advance division and is open to students at any rating. Players have to play two days: Saturday and Sunday. Please visit our website at for detailed information including the round times. Refund Policy Attendees can receive refunds up to 7 days before the event start date. You can obtain a refund of the entry fee prior to November 16, 2019 minus a $25 service charge for the  main tournament ($15 for scholastic). Registration withdrawal and refund request must be submitted in writing by emailing No refunds will be issued within 7 days of the start of the Scholastic Tournament. About the American Open: A heritage event and an American classic, the American Open is held annually on Thanksgiving weekend and is one of the longest running chess tournament in the United States. It was established in 1965 and has since attracted chess players from all over the world and from all levels, beginners to Grandmasters.
