Why Music Matters: Intro to the Orchestra

Launching our Family Concert Series, this free event is designed for listeners of all levels! Whether you are new to classical music or a seasoned listener, deepen your understanding and appreciation of classical music as we explore the orchestra: its formation, history, and traditions through the scope of Dvorak’s 8th Symphony. Enjoy musical demonstrations by special guests and leading experts, and participate in an open forum Q&A. The orchestra has been around since the year 1600, but it has changed dramatically over the centuries. In this 75-minute program, host Nuvi Mehta will take our audience on an exploration of the modern orchestra as we know it, discussing topics such as: what is an orchestra; the musical families of the orchestra; and what gave rise to the modern symphony orchestra as we know it. The program will conclude with a rousing performance of Dvorak’s 8th Symphony by the Orange County Youth Symphony. Presented by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County Hosted by: Nuvi Mehta, Classical Music Lecturer Tommy Phillips, Philharmonic Society President and Artistic Director Johannes Müller Stosch, Music Director and Conductor, Orange County Youth Symphony.
